Loss of hearing is more than simply missing out on the conversation. Prolonged hearing loss is tied to decreased physical mobility, cognitive decline, falls and dementia. In addition, hearing loss can cause many people to feel self-conscious, avoid social situations and become further isolated from daily life.
About 2 out of 3 older adults will experience some type of hearing loss. Yet close to 23 million of those remain untreated for their hearing loss. Johns Hopkins US Family Health Plan (USFHP) recognizes the spectrum of health impacts for people who have hearing loss, we have partnered with Access HEARS to offer 50% off over-the-counter hearing aids and personal amplifiers to eligible members.
Prescription hearing aids can cost thousands of dollars for one pair — too expensive for many people — and transportation to multiple appointments to see a doctor is simply not possible for many others. Often people choose to wait and see, but research shows that the longer you wait to treat hearing loss, the harder it becomes to get the benefits of treatment. Wait too long and your brain actually forgets how to hear.
Treating hearing loss is the number one modifiable risk factor to avoid dementia and memory impairment. USFHP is committed to provide access to affordable hearing care for our older members who have hearing loss. All USFHP retiree members and eligible retiree family members who have mild to moderate hearing loss are eligible to participate in the Access HEARS program.
The program begins with an initial phone interview to discuss hearing loss, available options and ways to help you navigate the process of hearing care. Following a virtual or face-to-face session, participants enjoy a free, two-week trial period with no obligation to buy, a follow-up at one month and ongoing support for the first full year. Participants learn the importance of treating hearing loss, what to expect when wearing hearing aids for the first time and much more. Access HEARS will also assist in choosing the right hearing aid, customizing the fit and teaching specific device use.
Access HEARS Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to connect individuals with hearing loss to the solutions they need to age well. Founded by physicians and leading hearing experts and entrepreneurs at the Johns Hopkins University, Access HEARS delivers services directly to the community, offering its clients a low-cost, in-person or virtual service delivery, teaching individuals how to use over-the-counter hearing aids and other high-quality listening devices.
